Grand Theft Springfield
The Simpsons Hit and Run is an action-adventure game developed by Radical Entertainment for the PlayStation 2 and other platforms. Thought to be inspired by the Grand Theft Auto series, the aim of the game is to complete missions while playing as various members of The Simpson’s cast (Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa & Apu).
Simpsons games have a history of mimicking the formula of popular games and franchises, especially during the early 2000s. For example, The Simpsons Skateboarding (2002) follows the Tony Hawks Pro Skater premise and The Simpsons Wrestling (2001) was similar to many of the popular WWF wrestling games. The Simpsons Road Rage was so much like Crazy Taxi that SEGA filed a lawsuit for patent infringement.
The majority of these games (Excluding The Simpsons Road Rage) were received very poorly and none were as successful as The Simpsons Hit & Run. One reason for this is likely due to the massive surge in popularity that the Grand Theft Auto series garnered following the release of GTA III.
But there’s more to account for its success than a simple matter of piggybacking. Unlike others, The Simpsons Hit & Run is an entertaining and well-polished game. It’s generally considered to be the best Simpsons game to date and it’s hard to argue otherwise.

A Sandbox Springfield
The Simpsons Hit and Run has a traditional sandbox style to it. You progress through the game by completing a series of missions, but also have the ability to free-roam whenever you please. While free-roaming, players can hunt for collectibles, sightsee and cause general light havoc.
Naturally, the level of havoc you’ll be causing is in no way on the same level as Grand Theft Auto. Violence and destruction have been considerably scaled-down in comparison to suit the spirit of the Simpsons universe. “Attacking” pedestrians as Homer, for example, involves clumsily kicking them, causing the NPC to fall over. The ragdoll physics are slightly exaggerated and it’s quite humorous to watch the NPC’s manically flail around on the floor.
Collect Them All!
We previously touched on the ability to hunt for collectibles while playing The Simpsons Hit and Run.
The main collectible in this game is collector cards. These are scattered throughout the map, on each level, waiting to be found by the player.
Each card features a notable object from the TV series, all of which are nice call-backs to memorable episodes from the show. Some examples of these include –
- The Mr. Sparkle Box (Episode 175: In Marge We Trust).
- A Bonestorm Game (Episode 139: Marge Be Not Proud).
- Bart’s Soul (Episode 132: Bart Sells His Soul).
- The Mr. Plow Jacket (Episode 68: Mr. Plow).
- A Pin Pals Shirt (Episode 140: Team Homer).
- The Gabbo Doll (Episode 81: Krusty Gets Kancelled).
- The Time Travel Toaster (Episode 109: Treehouse of Horror V).
There are 7 levels in The Simpsons Hit & Run and 7 collector cards to collect on each level, making for 49 cards in total.
Now, with The Simpsons Hit and Run you can play with Homer, Bart, Marge and Lisa on your computer, helping them solve the missions that arise. The Simpsons Hit and Run, as expected, takes place in the city of Springfield, so you will get to meet all the characters that are part of The Simpsons universe.
